Brand guide

Why Does Royal Canin Split Its Food by Breed and Age?

Royal Canin was founded in 1968 by a veterinarian. Since then, it has stood by one idea: no two dogs or cats are the same.

A Persian cat picks up kibble with its tongue, while a British Shorthair grips it with its jaws. A Chihuahua needs far fewer calories a day than a Golden Retriever. That's why Royal Canin designs not just what goes into the food, but also the size, shape and texture of each kibble.

When choosing, it's enough to ask three questions in order:

  • Age: Kitten/puppy, adult or senior?
  • Condition: Spayed or neutered? Any weight, digestion or skin issues?
  • Breed and size: For cats, is there a breed-specific formula? For dogs, which size group do they fall into?

Royal Canin Cat Food Guide

Sterilized cats: Sterilised 37

After spaying or neutering, a cat's energy needs drop noticeably while their appetite increases. If you keep feeding the same food, they can gain weight quickly.

Sterilised 37 was developed for this stage. It is low in fat and high in protein, so your cat feels full without taking in extra calories. Its mineral balance is also adjusted to reduce the risk of urinary stones.

When choosing a sterilized cat food, consider age too:

  • 1–7 years: Sterilised 37
  • Over 7 years: Sterilised +7
  • Sterilized kitten: Kitten Sterilised

Kittens: Mother & Babycat and Kitten

Life stage matters in kitten food. Use Mother & Babycat from birth to 4 months, and Kitten from 4 to 12 months.

These formulas are made for the period when the immune system is at its most fragile. The kibble is also small enough to chew easily with baby teeth.

Sensitive digestion, shedding and picky cats

If your cat has a specific issue, you can narrow down the formula:

  • Sensible 33 — For cats that vomit often or have soft stools. Highly digestible; reduces stool volume and odor.
  • Hair & Skin Care — For cats that shed heavily or have sensitive skin. Rich in omega fatty acids.
  • Savour Exigent — For picky cats that walk away from their bowl. The kibble's texture and aroma are tailored to this behavior.
  • Fit 32 — Balanced everyday care for active adult cats that go outdoors.
  • Indoor 27 — For indoor cats with low activity. Helps reduce hairball formation.

Breed-specific cat food

Royal Canin makes separate formulas for some breeds. The best known are British Shorthair, Persian and Maine Coon.

In these foods, the kibble shape changes with the breed's jaw structure. For example, the Persian kibble is almond-shaped so flat-faced cats can pick it up easily.

If your cat is a mixed breed, a breed-specific formula isn't necessary. Choosing by age and condition is enough.

Royal Canin Dog Food Guide

Start with breed size

The first split in dog food is breed size. Royal Canin uses four groups:

  • Mini — Small breeds, 1–10 kg
  • Medium — Medium breeds, 11–25 kg
  • Maxi — Large breeds, 26–44 kg
  • Giant — Giant breeds, over 45 kg

The difference between these groups isn't just kibble size. Small breeds have a fast metabolism and need more calories per kilo of body weight. In large breeds, joint health and digestive tolerance come first.

Puppies: Starter and Puppy

Puppy feeding has two stages. During weaning, use Mini Starter; the kibble can be softened with water. After that, move on to the Puppy range that matches their breed size.

How long the puppy stage lasts depends on breed size. Small breeds are considered adults at 10 months, while for large breeds this can stretch to 18–24 months. Switching to adult food too early can affect development.

Sensitive skin, weight and picky dogs

  • Dermacomfort — For dogs with itching or redness. Supports the skin barrier.
  • Light Weight Care — A low-calorie formula for overweight dogs.
  • Exigent — For dogs with a poor appetite or picky eaters.
  • Breed Health Nutrition — Ranges made for breeds such as Poodle, French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Maltese and Chihuahua.

Which Bag Size Should You Buy?

Larger bags cost less per kilo. But once opened, food stays fresh for a limited time; it's generally recommended to use it within 6–8 weeks.

So choose a bag size based on how fast you go through it:

  • One cat: 2 kg or 4 kg
  • Multiple cats: 10 kg or 15 kg
  • Small breed dog: 3 kg or 4 kg
  • Medium and large breed dog: 12 kg or 15 kg

If you're trying a food for the first time, it makes more sense to start with a small bag. If your pet doesn't like it, you won't be stuck with a big one.

How to Switch Foods

Switching foods suddenly can cause diarrhea and vomiting. Spread the transition over about a week:

  • Days 1–2: 25% new food, 75% old food
  • Days 3–4: 50% new, 50% old
  • Days 5–6: 75% new, 25% old
  • Day 7: 100% new food

Keep an eye on stools during this time. If they get soft, go back to the previous ratio and wait a few more days.

How to Work Out Daily Portions

The daily amount depends on species, weight, age and whether your pet is spayed or neutered. Every bag has a feeding table on the back, but these tables show averages.

A practical option: enter your pet's weight and age to see the recommended grams per day. Our Food Finder quiz works this out in a few questions and also recommends the right range.

The most reliable weight check is the ribs. If you can feel the ribs when you press lightly with your hand but can't see them, the weight is ideal.

Keeping Food Fresh

Dry food is affected by moisture and heat. When fats go off, both taste and nutritional value drop.

  • Keep the food in its original bag; the inside of the bag is lined against fat and moisture.
  • Close or clip the bag tightly after each use.
  • Store it in a cool, dry place. Balconies, garages and spots in direct sunlight aren't suitable.
  • If you pour the food into another container, wash and dry the container regularly.

Prices

Royal Canin cat and dog food prices

Royal Canin prices vary by bag size. The ranges below are pulled automatically from the current bags on the site; deals and discounts are reflected instantly.
When comparing, look at the cost per kilo. The best-value options are usually the 10 and 15 kg bags, while the 1.5 and 2 kg bags are good for trying a new formula.
The second measure is daily cost. Because Royal Canin is highly digestible, the recommended daily amount is relatively low, so the same bag lasts longer.

Royal Canin - Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Royal Canin Sterilised 37 and regular adult cat food?
After spaying or neutering, a cat's energy needs drop and their appetite increases. Sterilised 37 is made for both of these changes: it's low in fat and high in protein, so your cat feels full without taking in extra calories. Its mineral balance is also adjusted to reduce the risk of urinary stones. Sterilised +7 is used for sterilized cats over 7, and Kitten Sterilised for sterilized kittens.
How can I find out the expiration date of a food?
When you choose a bag size on the product page, the current expiration date of that bag is shown. Dry food should generally be used within 6–8 weeks of opening, so choose a bag size based on how fast you go through it.
When should I switch from kitten or puppy food to adult food?
For cats, the usual cutoff is 12 months. For dogs, it depends on breed size: small breeds are considered adults at 10 months, while for large and giant breeds this can stretch to 18–24 months. Switching to adult food too early can affect development. Make the switch gradually over a week.
When should I use Royal Canin Mini Starter? How is it different from Mini Puppy?
Mini Starter is for the weaning period; it's fed to small breed puppies until about 2 months. The kibble is very small and can be softened with water into a mash. Nursing mother dogs can also eat this food. When this stage ends, switch to Mini Puppy; the Puppy range is used for small breeds until 10 months.
My cat is a mixed breed. Are breed-specific Royal Canin foods necessary?
No. Breed-specific ranges are made for the jaw shape and known sensitivities of specific breeds such as the British Shorthair, Persian and Maine Coon. For a mixed-breed cat, choosing by age and condition is enough: for example, Kitten for a kitten, Sterilised 37 for a sterilized cat, or Hair & Skin Care for heavy shedding.
Can I feed dry and wet food together?
Yes, it's a common approach. Wet food increases water intake and helps with picky eaters. The key is not to exceed total daily calories: on days you feed wet food, reduce the amount of dry food. Royal Canin's dry and wet formulas within the same range are designed to be used together.
Which country is Royal Canin from? Where is it made?
Royal Canin is a French brand. It was founded in 1968 by veterinarian Jean Cathary in the town of Aimargues, France, and is now part of Mars Petcare. Bags sold in Türkiye are imported from production facilities in Europe; the place of manufacture is printed on the back of the bag.
Why does Royal Canin seem more expensive than other foods?
It's more accurate to compare by daily cost rather than bag price. Because it's highly digestible, the recommended daily amount is relatively low, so the same bag lasts longer. Large bags also have a noticeably lower cost per kilo.
