What Is Pro Plan? What Do the OPTI- Formulas Mean?
Pro Plan is the premium food line from Nestlé Purina PetCare. Purina was founded in the US in 1894; Pro Plan launched in 1986 as a top-tier line developed with veterinary nutritionists. In Türkiye it is often written as one word, Proplan; it's the same brand.
The names starting with OPTI- that you often see on the products tell you which issue the food focuses on. They are the most practical clue when choosing:
- OPTISTART — In puppy and kitten foods. Contains colostrum and is made for the period when immunity is at its most fragile.
- OPTIDIGEST — Sensitive digestion. Helps regulate stool consistency.
- OPTIDERMA — Skin sensitivity and coat health.
- OPTIRENAL — Kidney function support in cat foods.
- OPTIAGE — Mental alertness in senior dogs.
Pro Plan Dog Food Guide
Start with breed size
The first split in Pro Plan dog food is breed size. There are three main groups:
- Small & Mini — Small breeds, 1–10 kg
- Medium — Medium breeds, 11–25 kg
- Large — Large breeds, over 26 kg
These three groups apply to both adult and puppy foods. The difference isn't just kibble size. Small breeds have a fast metabolism and need more calories per kilo of body weight. In large breeds, joint health and digestive tolerance come first.
Large Athletic vs. Large Robust
Pro Plan splits large breeds into two groups, and this distinction is often overlooked.
Large Athletic is for lean, muscular dogs. Breeds such as the Doberman, Boxer and Setter fall into this group. Large Robust is for big, heavy-set dogs; breeds such as the Rottweiler, Bernese and Mastiff belong here.
If you're not sure, look at your dog's build. If the waistline is defined and athletic, choose Athletic; if the body is broad and heavy, choose Robust.
Puppies: the Puppy range
Puppy foods are also split by breed size: Small & Mini Puppy, Medium Puppy and Large Robust Puppy. All of them contain OPTISTART.
How long the puppy stage lasts depends on breed size. Small breeds are considered adults at 10 months, while for large breeds this can stretch to 18–24 months. Switching to adult food too early can affect development.
Weight control, spaying/neutering and dogs over 7
- Light and Sterilised — After spaying or neutering, energy needs drop and appetite increases. This formula has reduced calories while keeping protein levels.
- Senior 7+ — A formula with OPTIAGE for aging dogs. Made separately for medium and large breeds.
Pro Plan Cat Food Guide
Sterilized cats: Sterilised
After spaying or neutering, a cat's energy needs drop noticeably. At the same time, their appetite increases. If you keep feeding the same food, they can gain weight quickly.
The Sterilised range was developed for this stage. It is high in protein and low in fat, so your cat feels full without taking in extra calories. Its mineral balance is also adjusted to support urinary health. It comes in salmon, turkey and cod options.
For sterilized cats over 7, the +7 formula is used.
Kittens: Kitten
For kittens, use the Kitten range with OPTISTART. Colostrum supports the gap period until the kitten's own immunity develops.
Cats usually switch to adult food at 12 months. If they were spayed or neutered before then, you can move straight to the Sterilised range.
Sensitive digestion, skin and coat
- Delicate — For cats that vomit often, have soft stools or are picky eaters. Highly digestible with OPTIDIGEST.
- Derma Care — For cats that itch, have sensitive skin or shed heavily. Supports the skin barrier with OPTIDERMA.
- Adult — Balanced everyday care for adult cats with no specific complaints.
LiveClear: if someone at home has cat allergies
The main cause of cat allergies isn't the hair itself. It's Fel d 1, a protein in cat saliva; it gets onto the hair when the cat grooms, then spreads around the home as the hair sheds.
LiveClear is the only food line that targets this protein. In studies published by Purina, an average 47% reduction in allergens on cat hair was reported starting from the third week of daily feeding.
LiveClear is not a treatment and does not eliminate allergies. It aims to reduce the allergen load in the home. Kitten, Sterilised and 7+ options are available.
Bag Sizes: 15 kg or 14 kg?
The large bag for Pro Plan dog food is 14 kg; for puppy foods it comes as 12 kg. The "15 kg" that often comes up in searches usually refers to this large bag.
Cat food bags range from 1.4 kg to 10 kg. The LiveClear range comes in 1.4 kg; the other ranges come in 1.5 kg, 3 kg and 10 kg.
Choose a bag size based on how fast you go through it. Larger bags cost less per kilo, but once opened, it's generally recommended to use them within 6–8 weeks. If you're trying a food for the first time, it makes more sense to start with a small bag.
How to Switch to Pro Plan
Switching foods suddenly can cause diarrhea and vomiting. Since Pro Plan kibble size varies by breed size, don't rush the transition.
- Days 1–2: 25% new food, 75% old food
- Days 3–4: 50% new, 50% old
- Days 5–6: 75% new, 25% old
- Day 7: 100% new food
Keep an eye on stools during this time. If they get soft, go back to the previous ratio and wait a few more days.
